What are Stem Cells?
Stem cells are the foundation for every organ and tissue in the body. There are many different types of Stem Cells that come from different places in the body and at different times in our lives. At Plurimed we are focused on Adult Stem Cells from the blood. All Stem cells can self-new (make copies of themselves) and differentiate (develop into specific cell types). One of many benefits of the Pluripotent Stem Cells we are able to harvest and activate through the blood is the ability for them to potentially differentiate into all cell tissues.
In many tissues they serve as sort of an internal repair system, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells. When a cell divides it has the potential to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as liver, kidney, ligaments, and tendons.
Given their unique regenerative abilities, Stem Cells offer great potential for treating a variety of diseases.

Pluripotent Stem Cells
Pluripotent Stem Cells are master cells. They are able to make cells from all three basic body layers (Ectoderm, Endoderm, and Mesoderm), so they can potentially produce any cell tissue the body needs to repair itself. Like all Stem Cells, Pluripotent Stem Cells are able to self-renew, meaning they can potentially make copies of themselves.
Our PREP Therapy focuses on these Pluripotent Stem Cells.
Mesenchymal (MSC) Multipotent Stem Cells
Until recently the standard has been to harvest Multipotent Stem Cells from bone marrow or adipose (fat). This technology has been very successful in many orthopedic conditions. However Multipotent Stem Cells are not as successful in differentiating into all body tissues as Pluripotent Stem Cells. When harvesting from bone marrow and adipose it is necessary to use general anesthesia and perform a surgical procedure – causing more stress and trauma on your pet.
Standard vs. PREP Therapy
Adipose – In 2001 it was discovered that fat (adipose) has a significant abundance of Multipotent Stem Cells. This technology has been used in growing numbers since 2004 with very good success in orthopedic conditions.
Bone Marrow – Extraction of Stem Cells from Bone Marrow for treatment has been around for over 30 years. While generally bone marrow is harvested for the Hematopoietic cells to produce blood cells to treat leukemia and other blood diseases, bone marrow also has mesenchymal (called Multipotent Stem Cells). They have been successfully shown to differentiate into bone, cartilage, and connective tissue. In Veterinarian treatment, this is usually found in the treatment of horses.
In Bone Marrow and Adipose extraction general anesthesia is the preferred method. Both can cause pain and stress for the animal.
A simple minimally invasive blood draw is necessary to harvest the Pluripotent Stem Cells and the Platelets (PRP). Pluripotent Stem Cells derived from blood have the potential to differentiate into all types of tissues giving a much broader range of treatments. PRP has hundreds of growth factors essential in the healing process.
Our PREP THERAPY is considerably less traumatic as it involves a simple collection of your pets’ blood to isolate Pluripotent Stem Cells and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).
Peripheral Blood Pluripotent Stem Cells have been used in the treatment of humans since July 2014, followed by animals in January 2016.
